PPSR Check: Why It’s $2, Not $22 (2026 Guide)

A PPSR check costs $2 straight from the government register. Yet most search results push resellers charging $7.90 to $9.90 or more for the exact same information. So here’s what a PPSR check actually shows, what it leaves out, and when paying extra really helps.

If you’re also looking into this, our guide to Are Dealership Demonstrator Models a Good Deal? (2026) covers it in detail.

Quick Answer: PPSR Check

A PPSR check searches a national register for a vehicle or other item. It shows if money is owing, if it’s flagged stolen, or if it’s been written off. The official government search costs $2 through ppsr.gov.au. But other sites charge $7.90 to $9.90 or more for the same basic search. Those extra fees often add odometer history or a nicer report layout. Even so, a PPSR check skips a few things. It won’t show past owners, the exact loan amount, odometer readings, or unpaid fines. Those need their own separate checks.

1. Why the Same Check Costs $2 in One Place and $10 in Another

  • The government search itself costs $2. So ppsr.gov.au charges exactly that for a single vehicle search using the VIN or chassis number.
  • Resellers add packaging on top. For example, sites like RevsCheckReport bundle the $2 government data with a formatted certificate, faster support, or extra checks for $7.90 to $9.90.
  • Some “comprehensive” tiers cost even more. Meanwhile, MotorRegistry sells Basic and Comprehensive Plus packages that add odometer and service-history data the base PPSR search skips.
  • Paying more only makes sense for the bundle. So a single, no-frills PPSR search is worth exactly $2. Anything above that should buy something extra, not just cover a markup.

2. What a PPSR Check Actually Reveals

  • Money owing on the vehicle. First, a registered security interest shows up here, and it means a lender could still repossess the car even after you pay the seller in full.
  • Stolen vehicle status. Also, the register flags whether someone has currently reported the vehicle stolen.
  • Write-off history. Similarly, the search shows whether an insurer recorded the vehicle as written off.
  • Basic vehicle identity details. Finally, the system cross-checks make, model, and colour against the VIN or chassis number you enter, so the record matches the car in front of you.

3. What This Check Does NOT Show

  • No ownership history. So a PPSR check won’t tell you how many previous owners the vehicle has had.
  • No exact amount owing. Instead, the search only confirms a security interest exists — it never states the dollar figure behind it.
  • No odometer readings. So rollback fraud needs its own odometer history search, since a PPSR search skips this entirely.
  • No unpaid fines either. So a vehicle can pass a clean PPSR check and still carry unpaid tolls or tickets tied to a past owner.

4. Do You Need One for a Private Sale?

  • Dealers usually handle this automatically. So buying through a licensed dealer often means the check already happened as part of the sale process.
  • Private buyers carry the risk themselves. Because nobody runs a PPSR check on your behalf in a private sale, skipping it means buying blind.
  • The $2 cost is trivial next to the risk. After all, a lender can still legally repossess a car with money owing on it, even after you pay the private seller in full.
  • Run it right before paying, not weeks earlier. Since a security interest can appear on the register at any time, a check from a few weeks ago may already be stale.

FAQ: PPSR Check

How much does a PPSR check actually cost?
$2 for a single search direct through ppsr.gov.au. Reseller sites charge $7.90 to $9.90 or more for the same core data, typically bundled with extras.

What does a PPSR check show on a used car?
It shows whether money is still owing on the vehicle, whether a stolen report exists, and whether an insurer wrote the vehicle off, alongside basic identity details like make and model.

What doesn’t a PPSR check cover?
Ownership history, the exact loan amount owing, odometer readings, and unpaid fines all fall outside a standard PPSR check. Each of those needs a separate check.

Do I need a PPSR check if I’m buying privately?
Yes. Dealers often run this automatically, but a private buyer has to check themselves. Otherwise, a lender can still repossess a car with money owing on it, even after you pay in full.

Is it worth paying more than $2 for a PPSR check?
Only if the extra cost buys something the $2 search doesn’t cover, like a bundled odometer or written-off history report. For a single vehicle search alone, $2 is the real price.
