What is a step counter and how does it work?

A step counter, or pedometer, counts your steps by detecting the small, repeating acceleration your body produces each time a foot lands. This one reads that signal from your phone's own accelerometer through the browser's motion API, so there's no app to install and no account to create, and the counting never leaves your device.

Does the step counter work on a laptop or desktop?

No. Step detection needs a physical motion sensor, which desktops and laptops don't have. The page will still load and the Start button will still run, but the count stays at zero rather than showing a fake number. Use the Copy link button to open the same page on your phone instead.

Why does it ask for motion access on my iPhone?

iOS requires an explicit permission prompt before any website can read the accelerometer, as a privacy protection. Tap Allow when Safari asks - without it the counter has no data to detect movement from and will stay at zero. Android browsers don't add this extra step.

Does it keep counting if I lock my phone or switch apps?

No. Browsers stop delivering motion events once the screen sleeps or you switch away to another app, so counting pauses until you return to the page. Keep the screen awake and the tab in the foreground for a full walk; whatever was counted before that point is already saved.

How accurate is the step count, and can a car or bus register as steps?

The detector uses the same basic technique dedicated pedometers use - gravity-compensated acceleration, a rise-and-fall threshold, and a requirement that four peaks arrive at a plausible walking cadence before anything counts. That said, a smooth vehicle vibration can sometimes mimic a walking rhythm closely enough to register, since an accelerometer alone can't tell the two apart. If you're tracking a commute, it's worth pausing the counter for the parts spent in a vehicle.

Are the distance and calorie numbers exact?

No, and they're labelled as estimates on screen. Distance comes from your step count multiplied by an estimated stride length (based on your height, or a population average if you don't enter one), and calories scale with your body weight using a rough per-step energy figure. Both are reasonable approximations, not a measured result.

Is my step data private?

Yes. Your steps, goal, streak and history are saved only in this browser's local storage on this device - there's no account, no sign-in, and no data sent to a server, so nobody else can see your count. You can export your full history as a CSV file whenever you want a copy.

How many steps a day should I aim for?

The well-known 10,000-step figure isn't a clinical finding - it traces back to manpo-kei, a pedometer brand sold in Japan in the 1960s whose name simply means "10,000-step meter." A large pooled analysis of step counts and mortality across international studies, published in The Lancet Public Health in 2022, found the health benefit levelling off at roughly 6,000-8,000 steps a day for adults over 60 and roughly 8,000-10,000 for adults under 60. This tool defaults its goal to 10,000 because it's the number most people recognise, and Settings lets you set anything from 500 to 100,000 to suit your own target. It's a step counter, not medical advice - talk to a doctor about what's right for you if a health condition is involved.
