Payright: What “Interest-Free” Actually Costs Over Time

Payright markets itself as interest-free. That’s technically true, but the fees still add up. One guide explaining Payright is years out of date. Here’s the real current fee structure, and what it actually costs on a long-term plan.

Quick Answer: What Is Payright?

Payright is a buy now, pay later service for larger purchases, up to $20,000. Unlike Afterpay’s small four-instalment model, Payright spreads payments fortnightly or monthly over terms up to 5 years. It charges no interest, but it does charge an establishment fee, a monthly account-keeping fee (max $3.95), and a processing fee ($2.95 per payment). On a long-term plan, these fees can add up to real money even though no interest applies. One older comparison guide shows a lower $3.50 monthly fee — that figure is now out of date.

How Payright Actually Works

  • It’s built for bigger purchases. It covers amounts up to $20,000, compared to Afterpay’s $1,500 cap.
  • You pay an initial deposit. This is typically around 10% of the purchase price.
  • Repayments run fortnightly or monthly. You choose the schedule that suits your budget.
  • Terms stretch much longer than typical BNPL. Plans can run from a few months up to 5 years.
  • The merchant gets paid upfront. The full amount goes to the merchant right away, minus fees, so you repay the platform instead of the store.

The Real Current Fee Structure

  • The establishment fee depends on your term length. It’s $0 for 2-month plans, rising through $5, $39, $69.90, and up to $89.95 for 48-60 month plans.
  • The monthly account-keeping fee tops out at $3.95. One older guide still lists this fee as $3.50, a figure that’s now out of date.
  • A processing fee applies to every payment. It’s $2.95 per fortnightly or monthly repayment.
  • Late payments cost up to $12.95. This applies if you miss a scheduled repayment.
  • An annual cap limits total fees. The first 12 months top out at $200. Each following year tops out at $125.

What “Interest-Free” Really Costs on a Long Plan

  • No interest doesn’t mean no cost. Between the establishment fee, monthly fee, and processing fee, a long-term plan carries real ongoing charges.
  • A 5-year, $20,000 plan illustrates this well. The establishment fee alone could reach $89.95, and monthly and processing fees add up further across 60 months.
  • The annual fee cap puts a ceiling on the total. Year one tops out at $200, and $125 each year after, limiting how much fees can reach even on a long plan.
  • Compare the total fee cost against a loan’s interest. For a large purchase, it’s worth working out whether this fee structure or a personal loan’s interest actually costs less over the full term.

Payright vs Afterpay: The Real Differences

  • This platform allows much larger purchases. Up to $20,000, versus Afterpay’s $1,500 maximum.
  • Its terms run far longer. Plans can stretch to 5 years, while Afterpay is four payments over six weeks.
  • It suits big-ticket items. Renovations, education costs, and larger health expenses are common uses.
  • Afterpay suits everyday purchases. Clothing, electronics, and smaller retail items are its typical use case.
  • Late fees work differently. This service charges up to $12.95 flat, while Afterpay’s late fees are capped at 25% of the order value.

FAQ: Payright

Is Payright really interest-free?
Yes, it charges no interest. But an establishment fee, monthly account-keeping fee, and processing fee still apply, so it isn’t cost-free.

How much does Payright cost in fees?
The establishment fee ranges from $0 to $89.95 depending on your term length. The monthly account-keeping fee tops out at $3.95, and a $2.95 processing fee applies per payment.

What’s the difference between Payright and Afterpay?
This service allows purchases up to $20,000 over terms as long as 5 years, aimed at bigger purchases. Afterpay caps at $1,500 over four payments in six weeks, aimed at everyday purchases.

Is there a limit on how much Payright can charge in fees?
Yes. Total fees top out at $200 for the first 12 months, and $125 for each year after that.

What happens if I miss a Payright payment?
A late fee of up to $12.95 applies for a missed payment.
