Microphone Not Working on Zoom or Teams? How to Fix It (2026)

If your microphone not working on zoom or teams problem started suddenly, Windows permissions, the wrong input device, or an app-level audio setting is usually responsible. Check the selected microphone first, then work through permissions, drivers, Bluetooth, and browser access.

Quick Answer

  1. Check that the headset or microphone is not physically muted.
  2. Allow microphone access in Windows privacy settings.
  3. Select the correct microphone separately in Zoom and Teams.
  4. Close other apps that may be using the microphone.
  5. Reconnect Bluetooth headsets and check their microphone mode.
  6. Enable or reinstall the audio device in Device Manager.
  7. Allow microphone access in your browser when joining from the web.

Check the Physical Mute Switch and Microphone

Start with the simplest possibility. Many headsets have an inline mute button, while laptops may have a microphone mute key with an indicator light. Toggle the mute control once, reconnect the headset, and test again. Also confirm that the microphone is not muted inside the meeting application.

Allow Microphone Access in Windows 11

Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, then turn on Let apps access your microphone. Scroll down and also enable Let desktop apps access your microphone for traditional desktop programs. If this permission is disabled, Zoom or Teams may open normally but receive no audio.

Choose the Correct Microphone in Zoom

Open Zoom and click the gear icon for Settings. Select Audio, then check the Microphone section. Choose the actual headset, USB microphone, webcam microphone, or laptop microphone you want to use. Use the built-in test option and watch the input meter while speaking. Do not assume Zoom automatically selected the same device Windows uses.

Choose the Correct Microphone in Microsoft Teams

Open Teams and select Settings and more > Settings > Devices. Under Audio settings, choose the correct microphone. Start a test call if that option is available in your version. If Teams shows activity on the wrong device, switch it manually and reconnect the headset.

Close Apps Already Using the Microphone

Close recording software, browser tabs, voice chat apps, game overlays, and other meeting tools. Then quit Zoom or Teams completely and reopen it. A background app can hold an audio device or change its input state, especially with USB audio interfaces and Bluetooth headsets.

Fix Audio Drivers Through Device Manager

Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand Audio inputs and outputs and Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click the relevant microphone or audio device and choose Update driver. If the device is disabled, choose Enable device. When an update does not help, uninstall the affected device and restart Windows so the driver can reinstall.

Fix Bluetooth Headset Microphone Problems

Bluetooth headphones often expose separate playback and communication profiles. Disconnect the headset from Settings > Bluetooth & devices, then pair it again. In Settings > System > Sound, select the headset as both the input and output device when needed. Bluetooth microphone quality can change when the headset switches into hands-free communication mode.

Check Browser Microphone Permissions

If you joined Zoom or Teams through a browser, the browser needs separate microphone permission. Click the site controls icon beside the address bar and allow Microphone access, then reload the meeting page. Also check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone in Windows because browser permission cannot override a blocked system permission.

FAQ: Microphone Not Working on Zoom or Teams?

Why is my microphone working in Windows but not Zoom?

Zoom may be set to a different input device. Open Zoom Settings > Audio and manually select the microphone that works in Windows.

How do I allow Zoom to use my microphone on Windows 11?

Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone, enable Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone, then confirm desktop app access is enabled.

Yes. Close recording apps, browsers, voice chat software, and other meeting programs, then restart the affected meeting app.

Why does the microphone work in the desktop app but not the browser?
