Step 1: Find your singles by subtracting doubles, triples, and home runs from total hits. Step 2: Calculate total bases: singles ร— 1, plus doubles ร— 2, plus triples ร— 3, plus home runs ร— 4, all added together. Step 3: Divide total bases by at-bats. For example, with 50 hits, 10 doubles, 2 triples, 8 home runs, and 180 at-bats: singles = 50 โˆ’ 10 โˆ’ 2 โˆ’ 8 = 30. Total bases = 30 + (10ร—2) + (2ร—3) + (8ร—4) = 30 + 20 + 6 + 32 = 88. SLG = 88 รท 180 = .489.

Notice that SLG uses at-bats as its denominator, not plate appearances โ€” walks, hit-by-pitch, and sacrifice flies are all excluded, which is one of the biggest structural differences between SLG and OBP.

Common Mistakes When Calculating SLG

The most common mistake is forgetting to subtract extra-base hits from total hits before counting singles โ€” if you use total hits as “singles” without subtracting doubles, triples, and home runs first, you’ll double-count those hits and inflate total bases.
