1RM = Weight ร— (1 + Reps รท 30). This formula assumes a fairly direct, linear relationship between reps performed and percentage of true max, and it’s one of the most widely cited and commonly used rep-max estimation formulas across all of strength training.

That’s a genuinely solid estimated max relative to the 185 lb working weight, and it gives a useful, practical reference point for programming future training percentages without needing to actually test a true single-rep attempt.

How Accurate Is Rep-Based 1RM Estimation?

Rep-based formulas like Epley’s are genuinely reliable estimates within a moderate rep range, roughly 2-10 reps, but accuracy declines noticeably at higher rep counts, since the relationship between reps and percentage of max isn’t perfectly linear across the entire rep spectrum. A set of 20+ reps, for instance, tends to produce a considerably less reliable 1RM estimate than a shorter set of 3-5 reps.

Using Your Estimated 1RM to Build a Training Program

Once you have a reasonably reliable estimated 1RM, it becomes the foundation for designing structured training percentages across an entire program โ€” strength-focused blocks typically prescribe working sets in the 80-95% range for low reps, while hypertrophy-focused blocks work more in the 65-80% range for higher rep volume. Warming Up Properly Before a Rep-Max Test Set
