The Formula: Training Max and Weekly Percentages

Training Max (TM) = 1-Rep Max × 0.90. Each week’s working sets are then calculated as a percentage of this training max, not your true 1RM. Week 1 uses 65%, 75%, and 85% of TM across three sets. Week 2 uses 70%, 80%, and 90%. Week 3 (often called the “5/3/1 week”) uses 75%, 85%, and 95%, with the final set of each week typically performed for as many reps as possible.

Worked example: a 225 lb 1-rep max. Training Max = 225 × 0.90 = 202.5, rounding to 203 lb. Week 1 sets = 65% (132 lb), 75% (152 lb), 85% (173 lb) of that 203 lb training max — noticeably lighter than working directly off the true 225 lb max, which is exactly the program’s intended, deliberate conservatism.

Why the Program Deliberately Undershoots Your True Max

Basing every week’s percentages off 90% of your true max, rather than 100%, builds in a deliberate buffer that makes every prescribed set genuinely achievable with good form, even on a day when you’re not feeling your absolute best. This conservative starting point is central to the program’s long-term philosophy: slow, sustainable progress through small, incremental training max increases beats chasing an unsustainable, overly aggressive max every single cycle.

Because the training max stays intentionally below the true max, lifters following the program correctly can hit all prescribed reps consistently, which builds genuine confidence and technical consistency under the bar, rather than grinding through borderline-failed reps on a regular basis.

How the Three-Week Percentage Wave Works
