How to Turn an Old Laptop Into a Second Monitor

An old laptop cannot always become a physical monitor in the same way a dedicated display works. However, if it supports Windows wireless display features, it may be possible to use it as a second screen.

Check the old laptop

The laptop needs a compatible display-receiving feature and wireless hardware.

On Windows, search Settings for optional features or wireless display functionality.

The exact options depend on your Windows version and hardware.

Enable Wireless Display when supported

On a compatible Windows laptop, install or enable the Wireless Display optional feature if your system provides it.

Afterward, open the projection or display-receiving settings and allow the laptop to receive a wireless display connection.

Connect from your main PC

On the computer you want to use as the source, open the display projection controls.

Choose the wireless display option and select the old laptop if it appears.

Windows may then offer duplicate or extend modes.

Choose Extend if you want the old laptop to act as additional desktop space.

Expect some limitations

Wireless display can introduce latency. It may be fine for documents, chat, browser windows, and reference material but less suitable for competitive gaming or color-critical professional work.

Performance also depends on Wi-Fi quality and the hardware in both machines.

Keep both devices updated

Wireless display compatibility can depend on Windows components and graphics/network drivers.

Use supported updates from Windows and your hardware manufacturer.

When a cable will not work

A common misconception is that an HDMI port on a laptop can automatically accept video input.

On many laptops, HDMI is output-only. Connecting two laptops with an HDMI cable therefore does not necessarily turn one into a monitor.

Check the exact model specifications before buying adapters.

Alternative uses for an old laptop

If wireless display is not practical, the old laptop can still serve as a secondary computer for email, documents, music, remote access, or browser reference material.

Turning an old device into extra screen space pairs well with other multi-device setups — see how to connect an Android phone to a Windows PC, or how to record your screen on Windows 11 to capture your new dual-monitor workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Can every old laptop be used as a second monitor?

No. Compatibility depends on the laptop’s hardware and operating system.

Can I connect two laptops with HDMI?

Usually not in the way people expect, because laptop HDMI ports are commonly designed for output rather than input.

Is a wireless second screen good for gaming?

It can introduce noticeable latency, so it is generally better suited to productivity than latency-sensitive gaming.
