Chrome using too much RAM

How to Make Google Chrome Use Less RAM

Chrome can use substantial memory when you have many tabs, extensions, web applications, or media-heavy pages open. High memory usage is not automatically a problem, but it can make a computer feel slower when available RAM becomes limited.

Check Chrome’s own task manager

Chrome includes a task manager that can show which tabs and browser components are using resources.

Use it to identify unusually heavy pages or extensions.

If one tab is consuming much more memory than expected, close it or investigate the site.

Close tabs you no longer need

A simple solution is often the most effective.

If you have dozens of tabs open, consider bookmarking pages you need later and closing inactive tabs.

Modern Chrome versions also include features designed to reduce resource use from inactive tabs.

Review extensions

Browser extensions can consume memory and CPU.

Open Chrome’s extensions management page and remove extensions you no longer use.

If you suspect an extension is causing problems, disable it temporarily and compare Chrome’s behavior.

Use Memory Saver when available

Chrome provides memory-management features that can reduce the resources used by inactive tabs.

The exact settings can change between versions, so look in Chrome’s performance settings for memory-related options.

Limit heavy web applications

Online video editors, design tools, dashboards, games, and large web applications can use significant resources.

If your computer has limited RAM, avoid keeping several demanding web apps open at the same time.

Check other programs too

Chrome may not be the only source of memory pressure.

Open Windows Task Manager and check total memory usage. If other programs are consuming most of the RAM, changing Chrome settings alone may not solve the problem.

Restart Chrome occasionally

A restart can clear temporary browser activity and give you a clean session.

If Chrome repeatedly grows in memory use after a short period, investigate individual tabs and extensions rather than relying on constant restarts.

Pair this with clearing Chrome cache without losing your saved passwords, and turning off autoplay videos in your browser for an even lighter browsing experience.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Chrome use so much RAM?

Chrome uses memory to keep tabs, processes, extensions, and web content responsive. High usage becomes more noticeable when many resource-heavy pages are open.

Does closing tabs improve RAM usage?

Usually, yes, especially when the closed tabs contain heavy web applications.

Should I remove all Chrome extensions?

No. Remove or disable extensions you do not need or that appear to cause unusual resource use.
