How to Take a Screenshot on Windows 11

Windows 11 gives you several ways to capture what is on your screen. The best method depends on whether you want the entire desktop, a single window, or only a selected area.

Use the Print Screen key

Pressing Print Screen can capture the screen using Windows’ built-in screenshot behavior. On some keyboards, you may need to use Fn with the Print Screen key.

After capturing, you can paste the image into an app such as Paint or another editor.

Use Windows + Shift + S

One of the most useful shortcuts is Windows + Shift + S.

The screen becomes available for a snip, allowing you to select a rectangular area or another supported capture mode. The result can then be edited or copied.

This is particularly useful when you only need part of a webpage or application.

Use Snipping Tool

Open the Start menu and search for Snipping Tool.

The application provides capture options and basic editing tools. You can choose the area you want rather than capturing the entire desktop.

This is a good option when you need to annotate or save screenshots in an organized way.

Capture a full window

If you only need one application window, use a window capture option where available instead of capturing everything behind it.

This keeps the screenshot cleaner and reduces the need for later cropping.

Save screenshots in the right format

PNG is useful for screenshots containing text, interfaces, and sharp graphics. JPG can produce smaller files but may introduce compression artifacts.

Choose the format based on how you will use the image.

Check where the screenshot went

Depending on the method and Windows version, a screenshot may be copied to the clipboard, saved automatically, or opened in Snipping Tool for saving.

If you cannot find it, check the notification or paste the capture into Paint.

If a screenshot isn’t enough and you need the full process on video, see how to record your screen on Windows 11. Once you’ve saved your images, our guide on making a PDF smaller for email can help you share them.
