How to Find Duplicate Photos on Your Computer

Duplicate photos can appear after phone imports, cloud synchronization, messaging, backups, or repeated copies of the same folder.

Deleting them can recover storage, but you should identify duplicates carefully before removing anything.

Start with obvious duplicate folders

Look through folders such as Downloads, Pictures, Desktop, and imported phone-photo directories.

Sort files by name, date, or size to spot obvious copies.

Two files with similar names are not always identical, so do not delete them based on names alone.

Compare file details

Check file dimensions, file size, creation date, and modification date.

A photo edited slightly may look similar while being a different file.

Use duplicate-finding software carefully

Trusted duplicate-file utilities can compare files more thoroughly.

For private photo libraries, prefer tools that process images locally rather than requiring uploads to an unknown service.

Back up before bulk deletion

Create a backup before deleting large numbers of files.

This gives you a recovery option if the software incorrectly identifies two photos as duplicates.

Keep the best version

When two photos are truly duplicates, compare resolution, file format, metadata, and editing history before deciding which copy to keep.

The newest file is not always the best one.

Check cloud synchronization

If your photos are synchronized with a cloud service, deleting a file from one location may delete it elsewhere too.

Understand the service’s deletion behavior before starting a large cleanup.

Clean in small batches

Instead of deleting thousands of files at once, process one folder or group at a time.

This makes mistakes easier to detect and reverse.

If you’re clearing space on your PC, our guide on finding large files taking up space on Windows pairs well with this, and if you’re doing the same cleanup on your phone, see how to free up storage on Android without deleting photos.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find duplicate photos on Windows?

Start with File Explorer sorting and then use a reputable duplicate-finding tool if you need deeper comparison.

Are two photos with the same name duplicates?

Not necessarily. File names can be identical in different folders while the images themselves are different.

Should I delete duplicate photos from cloud storage?

Only after confirming the files are truly duplicates and understanding how synchronization handles deletion.
