How to Check How Much Storage Is Left on iPhone

Knowing how much storage remains on an iPhone can help you avoid failed downloads, updates, and photo imports.

Open iPhone Storage

Open Settings, then General, and choose iPhone Storage.

The page shows how much storage is used and how much remains.

You will also see categories and recommendations that can help identify large items.

Review the app list

Scroll through the applications to see which ones use the most storage.

Some apps become large because they store downloaded videos, music, documents, messages, or cached content.

Tap an app to see the available management options.

Check photos and videos

Photos and videos can be a major part of an iPhone’s storage.

If you use iCloud Photos, review the storage and optimization settings available to your device before deleting anything.

Never assume a photo is backed up simply because you use a cloud service; verify synchronization first.

Review Messages

Message conversations can contain large video clips, images, and attachments.

If Messages is consuming substantial storage, review large attachments and conversations you no longer need.

Check downloaded media

Music, podcasts, streaming videos, maps, and other offline content can take significant space.

Remove downloads you no longer need from the application that created them.

Use Apple’s recommendations

The iPhone Storage screen may show recommendations for removing or reviewing certain types of data.

Read each recommendation before applying it.

Keep some free space

A completely full phone can make everyday tasks more difficult.

Try to keep a reasonable amount of free storage so updates and temporary files have room to work.

If you’re running low, see our full guide on how to free up storage on iPhone without deleting photos — or, for Android users, the equivalent guide to freeing up storage on Android.
