Barcelona made a powerful statement in their La Liga campaign by beating Elche 5–0 at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero on Sunday, August 23, 2026. Raphinha scored twice, Karim Adeyemi added another goal just before half-time, and Fermín López completed the victory with a second-half brace.

The result gave Barcelona an impressive away victory and underlined the attacking strength available to Hansi Flick. Elche worked hard during the opening stages, but Barcelona gradually took control through their possession, pressing and movement in the final third.

Raphinha opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 14th minute. Adeyemi doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time, leaving Elche with a difficult task after the break. Raphinha scored again in the 67th minute before Fermín López struck twice in the space of eight minutes.

The final score—Elche 0–5 Barcelona—was a convincing reflection of Barcelona’s superiority in front of goal.

Match Details

Competition: La Liga
Match: Elche vs Barcelona
Final score: Elche 0–5 Barcelona
Venue: Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero
Date: August 23, 2026
First goal: Raphinha, 14th-minute penalty
Top scorers: Raphinha and Fermín López, two goals each

Barcelona’s victory was especially important because away matches against newly promoted or defensively organised opponents can create problems early in a season. Elche attempted to stay compact, but Barcelona’s quality and speed eventually opened the game.

How the Goals Were Scored

Raphinha penalty—14th minute

Barcelona took the lead in the 14th minute when Raphinha converted from the penalty spot. The Brazilian winger remained calm under pressure and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

The early goal changed the tactical picture. Elche could no longer focus exclusively on defending deep, while Barcelona gained more space to attack. Raphinha’s willingness to move inside from the flank also created opportunities for overlapping defenders and midfield runners.

Karim Adeyemi—45+3rd minute

Barcelona’s second goal arrived just before half-time through Karim Adeyemi. The goal gave the visitors a two-goal advantage at the interval and made Elche’s challenge considerably harder.

Adeyemi’s pace offered Barcelona a direct attacking option. While Barcelona are often associated with controlled possession, the German forward’s ability to run behind the defensive line added another dimension to the attack.

Scoring at the end of the first half was also psychologically damaging for Elche. Instead of going into the break believing they were still within reach of an equaliser, the home side had to recover from a 2–0 deficit.

Raphinha—67th minute

Raphinha scored his second goal in the 67th minute to put Barcelona 3–0 ahead. The winger also contributed an assist during the match, making him one of the most influential players on the pitch.

His performance demonstrated why he remains so important to Barcelona’s attacking structure. Raphinha was involved in creating chances, attacking space and finishing moves. His second goal effectively ended any realistic hope of an Elche comeback.

Fermín López—71st minute

Fermín López added Barcelona’s fourth goal only four minutes later. The midfielder arrived in a dangerous position and finished another well-constructed attacking move.

Fermín’s ability to make late runs into the penalty area is a valuable asset. He can contribute without constantly needing to receive the ball in deep midfield areas. Against Elche, his movement helped Barcelona exploit gaps that appeared as the home team tried to respond.

Fermín López—79th minute

Fermín completed his brace in the 79th minute, making the score 5–0. The second goal confirmed a memorable personal performance and completed Barcelona’s dominant evening.

Tactical Analysis

Barcelona’s main advantage was their ability to combine patience with direct attacking. They did not need to force every pass forward. Instead, they circulated possession and waited for Elche’s defensive shape to weaken.

Once Barcelona moved the ball quickly from one side to the other, Elche’s compact structure became more difficult to maintain. This created room for wingers and attacking midfielders to receive the ball in advanced areas.

The visitors also benefited from their pressing. When Elche attempted to build from the back, Barcelona applied pressure and limited the home team’s passing options. Winning the ball higher up the pitch allowed Barcelona to attack before Elche could reorganise.

Raphinha’s influence

Raphinha was central to the result. His penalty provided the breakthrough, and his second goal restored Barcelona’s momentum in the second half. His performance combined technical quality with aggressive movement. Rather than remaining fixed on the touchline, he moved into central positions and helped create overloads around the Elche penalty area.

Fermín’s attacking movement

Fermín López was another standout performer. His brace highlighted his value as a midfielder who can appear in scoring positions. Both of his goals came during a period when Barcelona were completely controlling the match.

For Barcelona, the performance will be encouraging because it showed that goals can come from different areas of the team. The attack did not depend on one centre-forward alone; wingers and midfielders also made decisive contributions.

Elche’s defensive problems

Elche were competitive early on, but the penalty placed them under immediate pressure. After Barcelona went ahead, Elche needed to take more risks. That created space for Barcelona’s forwards to attack.

The second goal before half-time was another major setback. With a 2–0 lead, Barcelona could play the second half with greater confidence, while Elche had to chase the match.

The final three goals also showed how quickly the game moved away from the hosts after the break. Once Barcelona found more space between the lines, Elche struggled to prevent repeated attacks.

Team News and Lineup Context

Barcelona travelled to Elche with midfield and squad-selection questions. Reports before the match indicated that Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji were unavailable, while Rodri was also not fully ready for selection.

Those absences placed greater responsibility on the available midfielders and required Barcelona’s coaching staff to manage the squad carefully at the beginning of the season.

Elche also had injury concerns before kick-off. Yago Santiago and Adam Boayar were reported unavailable, while other players were listed as doubtful in the build-up to the fixture.

Despite those problems, Elche tried to remain organised. Their plan was to defend in numbers and look for opportunities on the counterattack. However, Barcelona’s pressure and superior attacking quality prevented the home side from turning that strategy into a result.

What the Result Means

The 5–0 win gives Barcelona an ideal start and sends an early warning to their La Liga rivals. A large away victory provides confidence, especially for an attack that produced five goals through three different scorers.

It is also a positive result for Hansi Flick. His team showed several qualities expected from a title contender:

  • Efficient finishing in important moments.
  • Strong pressure after losing possession.
  • Contributions from both wide players and midfielders.
  • The ability to control the match after taking the lead.
  • Defensive discipline that kept a clean sheet.

For Elche, the defeat demonstrates the difference between competing against an elite title contender and facing a more evenly matched opponent. The home team will need to respond quickly, improve its defensive organisation and avoid conceding early goals in future fixtures.

A single heavy defeat does not determine Elche’s season, but the coaching staff will examine how Barcelona created space in central and wide areas. They will also need a clearer plan for moments when opponents score first.

Player of the Match

Raphinha was the leading candidate for player of the match after scoring twice and providing an assist. His penalty gave Barcelona the lead, and his second goal helped complete the collapse of Elche’s resistance.

Fermín López also deserves special recognition. His two goals in the final stages showed his ability to make decisive contributions from midfield. Karim Adeyemi’s goal was equally important because it arrived immediately before the half-time whistle.

Final Verdict

Barcelona’s 5–0 victory over Elche was more than an opening-weekend win. It was a confident attacking display built on pressure, movement and ruthless finishing.

Raphinha led the performance with two goals and an assist, while Fermín López added a late brace. Karim Adeyemi’s stoppage-time goal gave Barcelona control before the break, and the visitors then used that advantage to dominate the second half.

Elche competed during the early stages but could not contain Barcelona once the visitors increased the tempo. The final result leaves Barcelona with momentum and gives Elche important defensive lessons to address.

Final score: Elche 0–5 Barcelona.
