How to Calculate Holiday Leave Loading: Formula and Worked Example

Most pages explaining leave loading either hand you a raw formula or bury it inside an HR compliance guide. This guide covers how to calculate holiday leave loading in plain terms: what it actually is, the exact formula, a worked dollar example, and whether you’re even entitled to it.

Quick Answer: How to Calculate Holiday Leave Loading

Leave loading is an extra payment on top of your normal annual leave pay, usually calculated as your base rate multiplied by 17.5%. So, the formula is Base Rate × 17.5% = Loading Amount. You then add that loading to your normal leave pay to get your total payment. Not everyone gets it, though. Leave loading depends on your specific award or enterprise agreement, not a universal entitlement under the National Employment Standards.

The Formula, Broken Down

  • Leave loading sits on top of your normal leave pay, not instead of it. Your normal leave pay is your regular wage for the time you’re away. Leave loading is an extra amount added to that.
  • The standard rate is 17.5% of your base pay for the leave period. This figure comes from many awards and agreements across Australia, though the exact rate can vary depending on your specific one.
  • The formula itself is simple. Take your base rate of pay for your leave period, then multiply it by 0.175 to get the loading amount.
  • Add the loading to your normal leave pay for the total. So, your final payment equals your normal leave pay plus the loading amount on top.

How to Calculate Holiday Leave Loading: A Worked Example

  • Start with your hourly rate and hours of leave. Say you earn $35 an hour and you’re taking 76 hours of annual leave, which is two weeks for someone working a standard 38-hour week.
  • Calculate your normal leave pay first. $35 × 76 hours equals $2,660 in normal leave pay.
  • Now calculate the loading. $2,660 × 17.5% equals $465.50 in leave loading.
  • Add the two together for your total payment. $2,660 plus $465.50 equals $3,125.50 paid out for that two weeks of leave.
  • Your payslip should show these as separate line items. So, check that your normal leave pay and your loading appear separately, not combined into one unclear figure.

Are You Actually Entitled to Leave Loading?

  • Leave loading isn’t automatic for every employee. Unlike your basic annual leave entitlement, which is set by the National Employment Standards, leave loading depends on your specific award or enterprise agreement.
  • Many modern awards do include a 17.5% leave loading clause. However, some awards and individual agreements don’t include it at all, so you genuinely need to check your own terms.
  • Your employment contract or payslip is the fastest way to check. Look for a specific mention of leave loading, or ask your payroll or HR team directly if it’s unclear.
  • Casual employees usually don’t receive leave loading. That’s because casual loading already compensates for the lack of paid leave entitlements in the first place.

What Happens to Leave Loading When You Leave a Job?

  • Unused annual leave is generally paid out when your employment ends. This includes any accrued leave you haven’t taken yet.
  • Whether leave loading applies to that payout depends on your award again. Some awards include loading on termination payouts, while others don’t, so this isn’t a fixed rule across every job.
  • Check your specific award or agreement before assuming either way. So, don’t assume your final payout will or won’t include loading without confirming it first.
  • Your final payslip should itemise this clearly. If leave loading is included in your payout, it should appear as a separate amount, the same way it does on a normal leave payment.

FAQ: How to Calculate Holiday Leave Loading

What is the formula for calculating leave loading?
Base Rate × 17.5% = Loading Amount. You then add that loading to your normal annual leave pay for your total payment.

Is leave loading the same as normal annual leave pay?
No. Normal leave pay is your regular wage for the time you’re away. Leave loading is an extra amount, usually 17.5%, added on top of that.

Am I entitled to leave loading?
It depends on your award or enterprise agreement. Many awards include a 17.5% leave loading clause, but it’s not automatic under the National Employment Standards, so check your own terms.

Do casual employees get leave loading?
Usually not. Casual employees typically receive a casual loading instead, which already accounts for the lack of paid leave entitlements.

Does leave loading apply when unused leave is paid out at termination?
It depends on your specific award or agreement. Some include leave loading on termination payouts, while others don’t, so check your terms rather than assuming either way.
