
Jensen Huang Says AI Will Create Six-Figure Jobs in the Trades
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang argues that the AI boom will not just create coding jobs. It will also create a lot of work for plumbers, electricians, steelworkers, and builders. Much of it pays over $100,000 without a degree.
His reasoning is simple. Somebody has to build the data centres.
So here is what he actually said, the numbers behind the claim, and why a chip executive’s jobs forecast still needs care.

What Jensen Huang actually said
He spoke at Davos in January 2026, next to BlackRock CEO Larry Fink. Then he put it directly.
“It’s wonderful that the jobs are related to tradecraft,” he said, “and we’re going to have plumbers and electricians and construction and steelworkers.”
After that came the line that travelled furthest: “Everybody should be able to make a great living. You don’t need to have a PhD in computer science to do so.”
He had made the same case to Channel 4 News in the UK a year earlier, in stronger terms. “The skilled craft segment of every economy is going to see a boom,” he said then. “You’re going to have to be doubling and doubling and doubling every single year.”
The numbers behind the claim
Huang frames all of this as part of what he calls the largest infrastructure build-out in human history. The figures attached to it are large enough to make the phrase defensible.
Firms are set to spend roughly $7 trillion on data centres by the end of the decade.
A McKinsey study put rough numbers on the labour side. For the United States alone, between 2023 and 2030:

Why data centres need so many tradespeople
A data centre is not really a computer building. It is a power and cooling building that happens to hold computers.
So electrical work dominates. These sites pull enormous, non-stop power. Because of that they need substations, switchgear, backup generation, and distribution at a scale ordinary construction never touches. That is why electricians sit at the top of every projection.
Cooling comes next, and that means plumbing and HVAC work — liquid cooling loops, chillers, and water systems. Then there is the structural steel, the concrete, and the fit-out.
None of this happens remotely. None of it moves offshore. And crucially, the technology being installed cannot yet automate any of it away.
Why Jensen Huang is not a neutral source
Two things are worth holding alongside the optimism.
Huang has an interest in this framing. Nvidia sells the chips that go into these data centres. So a story in which AI creates broad, well-paid work without degrees suits his company, in business and in politics. That does not make the claim false. However, it does deserve the same care as any other boss’s forecast.
Construction demand is cyclical. These forecasts assume the AI build-out holds its pace through 2030. If capital spending slows, labour demand slows with it. Historically, construction is among the first sectors to feel that.
Finally, there is a timing problem the forecasts tend to skip. Training an electrician takes years. So a shortage spotted in 2026 cannot be fixed in 2027 — which is partly why the shortfall numbers look so large.
