Preservation Age: The Simple Answer, Plus the Full Table

Most guides make you wade through a birth-date table before answering the question you actually asked. Here’s the direct answer for almost everyone searching this, the full table for the rest, and how preservation age differs from Age Pension age.

Quick Answer: Preservation Age

This is the age you must reach before you can touch your super. You also need to meet a condition of release, like retiring. If you were born after 1 July 1964, it’s simply 60. That covers almost everyone still searching for this answer today. A graduated scale of 55 to 59 applied to people born earlier. They’re already in their late 60s or older now. So that scale is mostly a historical reference. Most current searchers don’t need to work it out at all.

Your Preservation Age by Birth Date

  • Born after 1 July 1964: yours is 60. This covers the vast majority of people checking this today. No table needed.
  • Born before 1 July 1960: it was 55. People in this group turned 55 back in 2015 or earlier. They’re already well past this milestone.
  • Born between 1 July 1960 and 30 June 1964: a sliding scale from 56 to 59 applied. Each birth-year band added one year. It stepped up to the final 60 threshold.
  • The transition fully finished years ago. Anyone still building toward it today lands squarely on 60. The table mainly helps now for checking an older relative’s situation or old records.

Preservation Age vs Age Pension Age vs Transition to Retirement

  • Preservation age (60) unlocks your super, not the Age Pension. Reaching 60 lets you access your own super savings. You still need to meet a condition of release too.
  • Age Pension age (67) is a separate government payment, not your super. Centrelink uses this age to assess Age Pension eligibility. It has nothing to do with your own super balance.
  • Transition to Retirement (TTR) sits between the two. Once you hit 60, a TTR income stream lets you draw a limited amount from super. You can keep working the whole time.
  • These three ages get mixed up constantly. They’re three separate milestones. Confusing them is one of the most common mistakes people make when planning around super.

What “Meeting a Condition of Release” Actually Means

  • Retiring after preservation age is the most common trigger. If you’ve reached 60 and permanently stop working, you generally get full access to your super.
  • Ceasing a job at 60 or older also counts, even without full retirement. You can access the super linked to that job. You can still take on other work later.
  • Turning 65 gives everyone full access, working or not. At 65, your job status stops mattering for accessing super.
  • A handful of early-access conditions exist below this age. These cover severe financial hardship, compassionate grounds, terminal illness, permanent incapacity, and the First Home Super Saver Scheme. Each has strict eligibility rules.

Why This Matters Before You Plan Around It

  • Getting this age wrong can derail a retirement plan. Assuming you can access super a year or two early catches people out.
  • Reaching it doesn’t guarantee unrestricted access. You still need a genuine condition of release. Retirement or ceasing employment are the common ones, not just turning 60.
  • Your super fund can confirm your exact figure. Most funds show this in your online account, worked out straight from your date of birth.
  • Get advice before making an access decision. A financial adviser or your fund can confirm which condition of release actually applies to your situation.

FAQ: Preservation Age

What is my preservation age if I was born after 1964?
It’s 60. This applies to almost everyone still checking this today, since the graduated scale for earlier birth years finished years ago.

Is preservation age the same as retirement age?
Not exactly. It’s when you’re first allowed to access super. You also need to meet a condition of release, such as retiring or ceasing employment.

What’s the difference between preservation age and Age Pension age?
This one (60) determines when you can access your own super. Age Pension age (67) determines eligibility for the separate government Age Pension payment.

Can I access my super before preservation age?
Only in limited circumstances, including severe financial hardship, compassionate grounds, terminal illness, permanent incapacity, or the First Home Super Saver Scheme.

Does turning 65 change anything if I’m still working?
Yes. At 65, you get full access to your super regardless of your employment status, without needing to meet any other condition of release.
