Liberty Mutual vs Travelers: The Real Numbers, Plus Two More Comparisons

By farwa syed

Liberty Mutual vs Travelers comes down mostly to price. Travelers wins, again and again. Across every age and every gender in real rate data, Travelers costs less than Liberty Mutual. Sometimes the gap is close to $100 a month. But if you’re weighing up these two, you’re likely checking other insurers too. This piece covers Liberty Mutual vs Travelers in full. Then it adds two more real match-ups. Farmers vs Liberty Mutual, and MetLife vs USAA. That way you skip three separate searches for the same choice.

Quick Answer: Liberty Mutual vs Travelers

Travelers is cheaper than Liberty Mutual, again and again. A woman aged 60 pays about $151 a month with Travelers. The same driver pays $226 with Liberty Mutual. A woman aged 25 pays $172 with Travelers, versus $274 with Liberty Mutual. Even a young man of 17, the priciest group of all, pays less with Travelers: $992 versus $1,015. Liberty Mutual’s edge is in the extras. Think a shrinking deductible and a lifetime repair guarantee. Travelers leans on low price and more discounts instead.

Liberty Mutual vs Travelers: Rates and Ratings

The rate gap between these two insurers holds up across every age group tested. Here’s the real spread.

A 60-year-old female pays $151 a month with Travelers. The same driver pays $226 with Liberty Mutual. A 35-year-old male pays $160 with Travelers, versus $265 with Liberty Mutual. Even at the highest-risk end, the gap holds. A 17-year-old male pays $992 with Travelers versus $1,015 with Liberty Mutual. Travelers stays cheaper even where both insurers charge steep young-driver rates.

Both firms hold a top A+ grade from the Better Business Bureau. The BBB lists Liberty Mutual as a member; it does not list Travelers. That gap makes little real difference to how claims get handled. One study found both firms rank at or below average on customer satisfaction in most areas. Neither one wins clearly on service alone.

Where they differ is the extras. Liberty Mutual offers a deductible that shrinks over time if you drive clean, plus a lifetime repair guarantee on covered work. Travelers leans harder on roadside help and more discount options. One more thing worth knowing: Liberty Mutual is a mutual firm, so its own policyholders hold a stake in it. Travelers is a normal public company instead.

Farmers vs Liberty Mutual

This is the second match-up worth checking if you’re shopping Liberty Mutual. Farmers costs a bit less on average. About $157 a month, versus $167 for Liberty Mutual. The gap is bigger on liability-only plans. Farmers charges $105; Liberty Mutual charges $127. Full plans cost about the same, at $209 versus $206.

Buyers like Farmers more. User reviews average 3.8 out of 5 for Farmers, versus 3.4 for Liberty Mutual. Farmers also gets fewer complaints filed against it with state regulators. Its score is 3.28, versus 4.28 for Liberty Mutual, where a lower number is better. Liberty Mutual does win on one score that matters most when you actually need to use it. Its claims-satisfaction score from J.D. Power is 730 out of 1,000, versus 690 for Farmers.

The coverage itself barely differs. Farmers offers rideshare cover and custom equipment cover. Liberty Mutual counters with its shrinking deductible and repair guarantee. Both include accident forgiveness, gap cover, and a rental car while yours is fixed.

MetLife vs USAA

This one starts with a question the other two don’t ask. Can you even buy USAA cover? USAA only sells to current and past military members, and their close family. If you don’t fit that, this whole comparison is moot, and MetLife is your only option here.

For those who do qualify, USAA is far cheaper across nearly every group tested. Drivers with top-tier credit pay $840 a year with USAA, versus $1,293 with MetLife. Teen drivers see the biggest gap of all. USAA charges $2,864; MetLife charges $6,434. That’s over $3,500 a year apart. Even after an at-fault crash, USAA still costs less. USAA charges $1,304, versus $2,598 with MetLife.

Both firms post the same 4.6 out of 5 buyer score in the same dataset. USAA earns an “Excellent” grade from J.D. Power. No matching MetLife score was available in the same source. That gap itself says something: fewer people track MetLife’s auto business closely, compared to USAA’s.
