UBank Interest Rates: The Intro Rate vs the Rate You’ll Actually Keep

UBank’s headline savings rate looks great for exactly four months. After that, it drops, and most pages don’t make that clear. Here’s the real breakdown of UBank interest rates, the simple condition to earn bonus interest, and what you’ll actually keep long-term.

Quick Answer: UBank Interest Rates

UBank’s Save account pays 5.85% p.a. as an introductory rate for the first 4 months. After that, it drops to an ongoing bonus rate of 5.10% p.a. Both rates depend on meeting one simple condition each month: growing your total savings balance by at least $1. So, if you don’t meet that condition in a given month, your rate falls to 0.00% p.a. for that month instead. Bonus interest applies on balances up to $1,000,000.

The Two-Tier Rate Structure, Explained

  • UBank uses an introductory rate followed by a lower ongoing rate. So, the 5.85% p.a. rate only applies for your first 4 months with the account.
  • After 4 months, the rate drops to 5.10% p.a. This ongoing bonus rate is what you’ll actually earn for as long as you keep the account and meet the condition.
  • Both rates require the same monthly condition to apply. Grow your total savings balance by $1 or more each month, and you earn the bonus rate for that month.
  • Missing the condition doesn’t cost you a penalty. It just means you earn the base rate of 0.00% p.a. for that specific month, then the bonus rate can apply again the next month if you meet it again.

What “Grow Your Balance by $1” Actually Means

  • The condition is simpler than it sounds. Your combined balance across all your Save accounts needs to be at least $1 higher at the end of the month than it was at the end of the previous month.
  • A small regular deposit is the easiest way to meet it. So, setting up an automatic $10 or $20 transfer each payday comfortably clears the $1 threshold every time.
  • Interest earned during the month counts toward growing your balance too. In many cases, the interest itself can be enough to meet the condition without any extra deposit.
  • Spend or Bills accounts don’t count toward this total. Only your Save account balances are counted, so moving money into a linked spending account won’t help you meet the condition.

What Happens If You Miss the Condition

  • Your rate for that month drops to the base rate of 0.00% p.a. So, you won’t earn bonus interest on your balance for any month where your total savings didn’t grow by at least $1.
  • This resets each month, not permanently. Missing the condition in one month doesn’t disqualify you from earning bonus interest again the next month.
  • There’s no separate penalty fee for missing it. The only cost is the bonus interest you don’t earn for that specific month.
  • Checking your balance growth before month-end is a simple habit that avoids this entirely. A small top-up a few days before the month ends can secure the bonus rate.

The $1,000,000 Cap and Why It Rarely Matters

  • Bonus interest applies to balances up to $1,000,000. So, for the vast majority of savers, this cap is well above what they’ll ever hold in a Save account.
  • Above that threshold, a lower or different rate structure may apply. This mostly affects high-balance savers rather than everyday accounts.
  • The cap is worth knowing if you’re consolidating multiple large savings goals into one account. In that case, spreading very large balances across separate accounts or institutions is worth considering.
  • For a typical saver, the practical rate that matters is the 5.10% p.a. ongoing rate. After all, that’s what you’ll be earning on most of your balance, most of the time.

FAQ: UBank Interest Rates

What is UBank’s current savings interest rate?
5.85% p.a. as an introductory rate for the first 4 months, then 5.10% p.a. as an ongoing bonus rate, both conditional on growing your total savings balance by $1 each month.

How do I qualify for UBank’s bonus interest rate?
Grow your combined Save account balance by at least $1 more than the previous month’s end balance. A small regular deposit or the interest you earn can be enough to meet this.

What happens to my rate after the introductory period ends?
It drops from 5.85% p.a. to the ongoing bonus rate of 5.10% p.a., assuming you continue meeting the monthly balance-growth condition.

What if I don’t meet the monthly condition?
You earn the base rate of 0.00% p.a. for that month only. It’s not a permanent penalty, and you can requalify for bonus interest the following month.

Is there a limit to how much UBank pays bonus interest on?
Yes, bonus interest applies on balances up to $1,000,000, which covers the vast majority of everyday savers.
