CommSec Brokerage Fees: Standard Rates and the CDIA Difference Most Pages Skip
CommSec’s own website currently promotes a time-limited $0 brokerage offer, which is great if you qualify, but it doesn’t clearly show the standard CommSec brokerage fees you’ll pay once that offer ends. Here’s the full standard fee schedule, and the CDIA detail that can more than double your cost on a small trade.

Quick Answer: CommSec Brokerage Fees
CommSec’s standard CDIA-settled brokerage fees are $5.00 for trades up to $1,000, $10.00 up to $3,000, $19.95 up to $10,000, $29.95 up to $25,000, and 0.12% above that. So, settling without a CDIA costs more: $29.95 flat up to $10,000, then 0.31% above that. International shares carry a 0.55% foreign exchange conversion fee. As of August 2026, new customers can also access a time-limited $0 brokerage offer on up to 30 trades under $50,000 each, running 1 September 2026 to 28 February 2027.
The Full Standard CommSec Brokerage Fees Table
- Trades up to $1,000 cost $5.00 through CDIA. So, this is CommSec’s lowest tier, and it applies specifically when you settle through the Commonwealth Direct Investment Account.
- Trades from $1,001 to $3,000 cost $10.00. This flat fee applies across the whole band, regardless of whether your trade sits near the bottom or top of that range.
- Trades from $3,001 to $10,000 cost $19.95. So, this is the tier most casual investors making a moderate-size trade will typically land in.
- Trades from $10,001 to $25,000 cost $29.95. Above $25,000, the fee switches from a flat dollar amount to a percentage of the trade value.
- Trades over $25,000 cost 0.12% of the trade value. So, a $50,000 trade at this rate costs $60.00 in brokerage, scaling up from there.
Why Settling Through CDIA Matters
- CDIA is CommSec’s linked cash account for settling trades. So, using it unlocks the full tiered fee schedule above, which is meaningfully cheaper than the alternative.
- Without CDIA, small trades cost far more. A trade up to $10,000 settled without CDIA costs a flat $29.95, compared to as little as $5.00 to $19.95 through CDIA depending on trade size.
- The gap narrows above $10,000, but doesn’t disappear. So, non-CDIA trades above $10,000 cost 0.31% of the trade value, well above the 0.12% CDIA rate for trades over $25,000.
- CDIA also has no monthly account-keeping costs. So, there’s no ongoing fee for holding the account itself, only the brokerage charged per trade.
The Current $0 Brokerage Offer
- New customers can currently trade brokerage-free under specific conditions. So, this applies to Australian Shares, International Shares, or Exchange Traded Options accounts opened within the offer’s account-opening window.
- The offer covers up to 30 trades under $50,000 each. So, trades must be placed online, either via the website or app, to qualify.
- It runs for a defined window, not indefinitely. As of August 2026, the offer covers trades placed between 1 September 2026 and 28 February 2027, after which standard rates resume.
- Trades exceeding $50,000 aren’t covered by the offer. So, any trade above that threshold incurs standard brokerage charges even during the promotional period.
International Shares and Other Costs
- International share trades carry a 0.55% FX conversion fee. This applies on top of any brokerage charged for the trade itself, across both CDIA and non-CDIA accounts.
- CommSec doesn’t charge account-keeping or inactivity fees. So, whether you trade often or rarely, there’s no ongoing cost just for holding an open account.
- Brokerage is the main recurring cost to budget for. Since there’s no account fee, your total cost mostly comes down to how often you trade and which settlement method you use.
- Check the current Financial Services Guide for full detail. So, CommSec’s official FSG is the authoritative source for any fee not covered in a quick comparison, including less common trade types.
