Bankwest Retirement Advantage Account: The Real Rate Tiers (One Review Gets Them Wrong)

The Bankwest Retirement Advantage Account pays up to 2.55% per annum for balances over $250,000. A well-ranked Finder review, still showing from August 2025, says that top rate kicks in “above $48,000” instead. Here’s the actual current tier table, how the tiers really work, and what to know before you apply.

Quick Answer: Bankwest Retirement Advantage Account

The Retirement Advantage Account is a fee-free transaction and savings account for Australians aged 55 and over. Interest is tiered by balance: 0.05% per annum up to $9,999.99, 1.55% from $10,000 to $49,999.99, 2.05% from $50,000 to $249,999.99, and 2.55% from $250,000 and above. There’s no monthly account fee, no ATM fee, and no foreign transaction fee. It comes with a Platinum Debit Mastercard. Since 2024, Bankwest has had no branches — everything runs through phone, app, and mail.

The Real Interest Rate Tiers

Sourced directly from Bankwest’s own account page and cross-checked against a second current comparison source, current as at 20 August 2026:

BalanceRate (per annum)
$0 – $9,999.990.05%
$10,000 – $49,999.991.55%
$50,000 – $249,999.992.05%
$250,000+2.55%

A Finder review still ranking well for this account, dated 26 August 2025, states the top 2.55% rate applies “if your account balance is above $48,000.” That doesn’t match Bankwest’s own current tier structure. The 2.05% tier starts at $50,000, and 2.55% doesn’t start until $250,000 — a full five times higher than Finder’s stated figure. If you’re planning around that number, check the current official tiers before you decide, since a wrong threshold could shape a real decision about where to keep your savings.

How the Tiers Actually Work

This is worth spelling out, because it trips people up on every tiered-rate account, not just this one. Each rate applies only to the portion of your balance sitting in that tier — not your whole balance. If you hold $60,000 in the account, you don’t earn 2.05% on the full $60,000. You earn 0.05% on the first $9,999.99, 1.55% on the next chunk up to $49,999.99, and 2.05% only on the remaining amount above $50,000. Most pages covering this account don’t spell that out clearly. It’s a common misunderstanding with tiered savings products generally, not unique to Bankwest.

Eligibility and Fees

You need to be 55 or older to open the account. For a joint account, at least one applicant needs to meet that age requirement. There’s no minimum opening deposit. Fees are genuinely zero across the board: no monthly account-keeping fee, no ATM fee at Australian or international machines, no foreign transaction fee, no dishonour fees, no card replacement fee, and no paper statement fee. The only cost that can apply is from a third-party ATM operator, which is standard across the industry and outside Bankwest’s control.

There Are No Branches to Visit

Bankwest closed its physical branch network in 2024, shifting to a fully digital model. For a product aimed at people aged 55 and over, that’s worth knowing plainly before you apply — a demographic more likely to value in-person banking than younger customers. Everything for this account runs through the Bankwest app, phone support, and mail. If face-to-face banking matters to you, that’s a real trade-off to weigh against the competitive rate.

Is the Bankwest Retirement Advantage Account Worth It?

For balances above $250,000, the 2.55% rate is competitive against other seniors’ savings accounts on the market, and the fee-free structure is a genuine advantage — many transaction accounts charge monthly fees that quietly eat into interest earned. For smaller balances under $50,000, the rate drops sharply, and you may find a dedicated high-interest savings account elsewhere pays more on modest balances. The right call depends on how much you’re keeping in the account and whether you need transaction-account features (a debit card, everyday spending) alongside the interest, rather than a pure savings account.

FAQ: Bankwest Retirement Advantage Account

What is the current interest rate on the Bankwest Retirement Advantage Account?
It’s tiered: 0.05% per annum up to $9,999.99, 1.55% from $10,000-$49,999.99, 2.05% from $50,000-$249,999.99, and 2.55% from $250,000 and above, as at 20 August 2026.

Who can open a Retirement Advantage Account?
Anyone aged 55 or over. For joint accounts, at least one applicant must meet the age requirement.

Does the top rate apply to my whole balance?
No. Each tier’s rate only applies to the portion of your balance within that tier, not the full amount — a common point of confusion with tiered-rate accounts generally.

Are there any fees on this account?
No monthly fee, no ATM fee, and no foreign transaction fee. Third-party ATM operators may still charge their own fee, which is outside Bankwest’s control.

Can I visit a Bankwest branch to manage this account?
No. Bankwest closed its branch network in 2024. Account management runs through the app, phone support, and mail.
