Spider-Man: Brand New Day landed in US cinemas on Friday, July 31, 2026, and it immediately rewrote the record books. The film took $168 million on its opening day, beating the $157 million that Avengers: Endgame had held since 2019.

Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker. Destin Daniel Cretton directs. And the movie arrives four years after No Way Home wiped Peter Parker from the world’s memory.

Doctor Strange’s spell at the end of No Way Home erased Peter Parker from everyone’s memory. Four years have passed since then.

Peter now works as Spider-Man full-time, anonymous in a city that does not know his name. Meanwhile his old friends have moved on without him, and the isolation is starting to change him.

His powers are changing too. He generates organic webbing now, and his eyes turn black. Marvel’s official synopsis calls it “a change in Peter he may not have the power to control,” and it describes the antagonist as “a powerful villain no one can even see.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day box office records

The numbers came in fast, and several of them were historic.

One caveat is worth knowing. The preview figure included Wednesday early-access screenings and extended Thursday showtimes, while Endgame started at a standard 6 PM on Thursday. So the comparison is not perfectly like for like.

The weekend record remains genuinely close. Sony projected $325 million, which falls short. Independent industry estimates put it nearer $358 million, which would edge past Endgame. Global opening estimates sit around $925 million, still well behind Endgame’s $1.22 billion.

Why the gap between those two projections? Studios routinely forecast low, because a number that beats expectations makes a better story on Monday morning. Independent trackers have no reason to do that. The real figure usually lands somewhere between the two, and final Sunday numbers settle it either way.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day full cast

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk both cross over from other corners of the MCU. Sadie Sink’s casting was kept secret until release, and it turned out to be the biggest talking point of the film.

Who made it

Destin Daniel Cretton directed, after previously making Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for Marvel. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers wrote the script with Justin Kuritzkes.

Filming ran from August to December 2025, largely in Glasgow, Scotland, with additional work at Pinewood Studios in England. Glasgow’s streets stood in for New York.

The trailer that broke every record

Before the film opened, its first trailer had already made history.

It pulled 718.6 million views in 24 hours, roughly double the previous record of 365 million. Within four days it passed 1.1 billion views, making it the first movie trailer ever to reach that mark.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day ending explained

The film opens by pointing you at the wrong villain. Jean Grey, a teenage mutant with powerful telepathy, appears to be the threat. She possesses people and uses them to attack Department of Damage Control facilities.

But the DODC is the real problem. Its director, Bill Metzger, had Jean’s sister Sara kidnapped and experimented on. Sara dies during that research.

When Jean learns what happened, her abilities surge. Peter reaches her by sharing a memory of Aunt May, one about isolation and the weight of having power — the thing he understands better than anyone.

The climax turns on a single moment. Frank Castle fires at Jean to break her psychic grip on the room. Spider-Man throws himself in front of her and takes the shot, and the wound is critical. Jean holds him alive with her telepathy, then walks away and boards a bus to somewhere unnamed.

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day post-credits scene

There is only one credits scene, and no mid-credits gag — unusual for Marvel.

It shows the Spider-Man tracker Ned Leeds built to follow Peter’s movements and DNA signature. No actors appear. The screen simply registers a Spider-Man signal in deep space, past the orbit of the moon, before the text confirms: Spider-Man Will Return.

The obvious reading is a multiverse variant. A Spider-Man detected in deep space points toward another version of the character arriving in a future Avengers film, which is roughly how the Fantastic Four are expected to enter the MCU proper.
