Who is Sadie Sink?
She was born on April 16, 2002, in Brenham, Texas, which makes her 24. Most people know her as Max Mayfield from Stranger Things, the role she played across the show’s run from 2017 to 2025.
Her career started on stage rather than screen. She appeared in Annie on Broadway between 2012 and 2014, and then in The Audience in 2015.

How the secret held
Marvel listed her in the cast and simply never said who she was playing.
Official materials named her alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo, but her character line stayed blank. Wikipedia’s cast list carried “role unspecified” for months. Reports pointing to Jean Grey surfaced in the days before release, though Marvel never confirmed them ahead of time.
That worked in the studio’s favour. The trailer went on to become the most-viewed in history — 718.6 million views in its first 24 hours — and the mystery casting was part of what people were arguing about.

What Sadie Sink actually does in the film
She is introduced as a teenage mutant with powerful telepathy, and for much of the runtime the film wants you to think she is the villain.
She possesses people and directs them against Department of Damage Control facilities. Her range expands as the story goes on, and Spider-Man spends most of the second act trying to stop her.
Then the film turns. The DODC is the real antagonist. Its director, Bill Metzger — played by Tramell Tillman — had Jean’s sister Sara abducted and experimented on, and Sara died during that research. Jean is not attacking at random. She is hunting the people responsible.
Peter Parker gets through to her not by overpowering her but by sharing a memory of Aunt May, about isolation and the weight of carrying power alone. Learning what happened to Sara pushes her abilities to a new level.
The climax costs Peter badly. Frank Castle fires at Jean to break her psychic hold on the room. Spider-Man puts himself in the way and takes the shot, and the wound is critical. Jean keeps him alive with her telepathy, then leaves the city on a bus, destination unstated.
Why Sadie Sink’s casting matters
Jean Grey is not a minor mutant. She is one of the five original X-Men, first published in 1963, and she is bonded to the Phoenix Force — the cosmic entity behind the Dark Phoenix Saga, the most adapted storyline in X-Men history.
Bringing her in signals that Marvel’s mutant plans are properly underway. Jake Schreier is directing an X-Men reboot for the studio, and the most valuable X-Men character now already exists in this continuity, played by an actor under contract.
The film is also careful about what it does not do. The Phoenix Force never appears. Sink plays Jean before any of the cosmic material, which leaves the entire Dark Phoenix arc available for later — and gives her somewhere to grow that two previous adaptations reached too quickly.
Her ending is built the same way. Leaving on a bus to nowhere specific is not a resolution. It is a door held open.
